about
Here's a version of the much-loved carol, written for Paul Kerensa's Nine Comedians & Carols, and recorded at home, with many instruments.
lyrics
While shepherds watched their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
One shepherd came with a deckchair
And envy spread around
"Where did you get that lovely chair?"
The other shepherds quothed
"I got it from the Argos sale
Twas thirty percent off"
"Well now," the shepherds trilled as one
"That is a cracking deal
It looks like double-stitched nylon
Here, let me have a feel"
And so the shepherds all queued up
To stroke the blessed flax
Not noticing an angel bright
Descending at their backs
"Fear not!" said he
"That's mighty dread, that's struck you to a man"
They said "The Mighty Dread sounds like
An awesome reggae band"
"Yes, well, it's not" spake seraph, quite annoyed
"And what's that chair you pat?"
"A tri-weave nylon deckchair! Try it!
Get your bum on that!"
The angel said, "It's comfortable
And durable, it's like
My bottom's wrapped in swaddling bands"
Which was overstating the point a bit
Thus seated in great comfort, the
Angel spread the good news
Of baby born to virgin and
Shepherds went aah, and ooh
"Yet what I can I can I give him
Poor as I am?
Oh, if I were a shepherd then
I would give him a lamb"
"You are a shepherd," spake seraph
And so the men declared
To give the Lord seven lambs
And one comfortable deckchair
